Cutback bitumen is a petroleum product produced by diluting bitumen in petroleum hydrocarbon. The aim is to decrease the viscosity and to increase the penetration of bitumen on asphalt surface. In comparison with bitumen, cutback bitumen is sprayed on different layers of roads in a notably lower temperature. Once the solvent is evaporated, the remaining bitumen equals with penetration bitumen in terms of hardness. Cutback bitumen gets the name from the solvent which is used in the process, because the solvent cuts back or evaporates, leaving the binder on the surface to do the rest of the work. The solvent used is called the cutter or flux.

Good quality cutback bitumen: MC 30, MC 70 and MC 3000.

Medium Curing Cutback (MC 30)

Mostly used as a primer in coating roads. This grade of bitumen is sprayed over a granular base to prepare it for laying an asphalt mixture. With its low viscosity, MC 30 cutbacks will coat and bond loose aggregate on the surface of the base. The other use of MC 30, apart from prime coating is cold mix asphalt and bitumen paints. MC-30 bitumen is widely used as a primer in coating roads. This grade of bitumen is sprayed over a granular base to prepare it for laying an asphalt mixture. With its low viscosity, MC- 30 cutbacks will coat and bond loose aggregates on the surface of the base

Medium curing is the most popular in cutback bitumen, MC-30 grade has the highest demand. It contains 55% bitumen and has the lowest viscosity among all grades. It is black in color and is manufactured strictly as per international standard.

Uses of MC 30
  • Used as components for road maintenance industry where it is used as a prime coat of the base course prior to placing of the bituminous surface course.
  • As an adhesive material between road foundation and asphalt coating, in the road construction industry which includes superstructure and foundation.
  • Priming of all non-bituminous road buses, provision of temporary surfaces(deviations)
  • Cutback Asphalt MC-30 is suitable for primer sealing and can also be used in the manufacturing of asphalt pre-mix.
  • Cutback bitumen is used extensively in sprayed sealing applications, particularly in colder weather where they proved improved initial stone retention due to their lower viscosity.
Medium Curing Cutback (MC 70)

A medium curing (MC) cut-back bitumen consisting of penetration grade asphalt cement and diluent or cutter of medium volatility. MC-70 diluent momentarily reduces the viscosity of the asphalt cement for ease of handling and application. After application, the diluent evaporates, leaving asphalt cement to perform its function. Cutback MC-70 finds application in Roofing – As a waterproofing membrane and as an adhesive to stick chippings onto a flat, horizontal roof to minimize the effects of weathering from the sun.

Our MC-70 Cutback Bitumen at Koshin Bitumen complies with cutback petroleum asphalts of the Medium-Curing type for use in the construction and treatment of pavements and is normally used in spraying and in some mixing applications.

Uses of MC 70
  • Cutback agents are used to lower the viscosity of bitumen when it is applied as a primer to the surface of a road pavement aggregate base course or substrate. Kerosene is used as a bitumen cutback agent at different concentrations according to local conditions and requirements.
  • The cutback bitumen is ideal for prime coat and cold applied because of easy uses and no need to thinning and heating.
  • Cutback bitumen MC-70 consist of initial incorporation of asphalt into the surface of non-asphalt-based course preparatory to any superimposed treatment of construction.
  • The cutback asphalt MC-70 applying to waterproofing of surfaces, plug capillary voids, coat and bond loose mineral particles.
  • Current common uses are in penetrating prime coats and in producing patching or stockpile mixtures. Cutback asphalt used in mixing with aggregate will usually contain an adhesion agent to assist in the coating of the aggregate surface.
Medium Curing Cutback (MC 3000)

A type of dissolved of bitumen in solvents of kerosene and other volatile petroleum-derived products are added as a cutter or cutback agent to bitumen to reduce (or cutback) the viscosity of the bitumen. The mixture obtained may be called cutback bitumen. When applied as expected the solvent oil evaporates and bitumen residue to obtain the desired adhesion. On application the decrease in viscosity of the bitumen helps the construction of seal coats in road pavements as the softened mixture wets the chips more easily. The cutback agent evaporates from the seal coat, the cutback agent becoming a negligible component of the seal coat a few months after application.

Cutback MC-3000 is used in  road maintenance where it is used as a prime coat of the base course prior to placing the bituminous surface course.
